Leading electrical contractor brings expertise to 99-unit development addressing housing crisis

  • $5.8 million electrical contract for 100,000 square foot development
  • 99 affordable housing units with 25 reserved for homeless transition
  • Project completion expected in 2028

SAN JOSE, Calif. (February 2, 2026) — Helix Electric, a leading electrical contractor with over 3,000 employees and over $1 billion in annual revenue, breaks ground on February 2 on the Lupina affordable housing project in the Guadalupe Washington neighborhood of San Jose. The electrical contractor, working alongside Nibbi Brothers General Contractors, brings specialized electrical design and construction expertise to the project led by Resources for Community Development (RCD).

Helix Electric designed the electrical and low-voltage systems for the $5.8 million contract on the 99-unit, 100,000 square foot development. The company’s electrical infrastructure will power the six-story mixed-use development at 797 Almaden Avenue, ensuring reliable power distribution throughout residential units and ground-floor commercial space.

“Every family deserves electrical systems they can count on, especially those rebuilding their lives,” said Jason Pengel, Executive Vice President of Helix Electric Inc. “We design these systems knowing that reliable power means children can do homework, parents can prepare meals, and families can create the stability they need to thrive.”

The RCD will reserve 25 units for individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. The development features approximately 2,300 square feet of community-serving commercial space, with on-site property management and supportive services for all residents. The project is projected to be completed in 2028.

“Our work here creates more than electrical connections. We build the invisible foundation that lets families put down roots and contribute to their community’s future,” said Boris Shekhter, CEO of Helix Electric, Inc. “Our commitment to community development means we bring the same technical excellence to affordable housing that we deliver to all our projects, helping create lasting solutions to the housing crisis.”

The Lupina project expands Helix Electric’s affordable housing portfolio in the San Jose area, which includes current electrical work at the Kooser Road development and Gateway Tower. These projects showcase the company’s ability to navigate complex residential electrical requirements while meeting strict budget constraints typical of affordable housing developments.
