Chanen Construction Transforms Sedona Hotel
Renovation project blends adventure focus design while boosting local economy
SEDONA, Ariz. (May 13, 2025) – Chanen Construction, a Dick Anderson Construction (DAC) company, announces the recent completion of the rebranded Mountain Modern Sedona. The grand opening was held on April 26, 2025, less than a year since the beginning of the project. Chanen Construction started the extensive renovation of Crystal Creek Capital’s former Sedona Real Inn & Suites in June of 2024. The renovation transformed the property into Mountain Modern Sedona, a brand that caters to adventure-seeking travelers with a designed forward yet functional basecamp with features that highlight Sedona’s natural beauty and heritage. The project culminated with the largest phase, which included the lobby renovation and transformation of two guest room buildings.
The renovation project encompasses eight buildings, including 89 rooms, studios, and suites, with Chanen Construction renovating two buildings at a time while the rest of the property remained occupied. A key feature of the renovation is the transformation of the lobby, which boasts a new bar and an expanded kitchen to service a destination-inspired culinary outlet. The pool area also endured a complete redesign, enhancing the property’s recreational offerings.
“Chanen Construction embraced this project’s unique opportunities, including adhering to strict noise and safety protocols to ensure a seamless experience for hotel guests during renovations,” said Rivers Anderson, Project Manager for Chanen Construction. “Work hours were thoughtfully scheduled between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to minimize disruption, reflecting our commitment to guest satisfaction. Additionally, the team collaborated closely with the city of Sedona to honor dark sky ordinances and color restrictions, ensuring compliance while achieving the project’s aesthetic vision.”
“This project showcases our ability to navigate complex renovations while respecting the unique character of Sedona,” said Dean Howard, Vice President of Development for Chanen Construction. “We’re proud to work with local contractors and adapt to the city’s specific requirements, all while transforming this property into a modern, adventure-focused destination.”
The project highlights Chanen Construction’s commitment to local economic development. The company worked solely with Arizona-based contractors, with many sourced from the Verde Valley region. Notable local partners include Pur Solar & Electrical from Cottonwood and Tyler Baxter Enterprises, which handles demolition, framing, and drywall work. Straightline Custom Painting, a subcontractor with historical ties to the original Sedona Real, provides valuable insight into navigating local color ordinances. The scope of work included new paint, flooring, and large millwork pieces.
This renovation transforms the property into Mountain Modern Sedona, expanding the popular Mountain Modern brand beyond its Jackson Hole, Wyoming, origins. Each renovated room features a 7-by-5-foot mural showcasing different Sedona landscapes, by photographer, Ryan Sheets.
With the project’s schedule aimed for completion by this spring. Chanen Construction’s team worked diligently to bring each renovated section up to code while adhering to this tight timeline. This included coordinating with hotel staff to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations, such as carefully scheduling access to the working laundry facilities, while renovating that section of the property.
